Why You Should Mulch Your Garden This Fall
I’m here to tell it to you straight. Weeding is a complete waste of time. And if you’re spending more than a few minutes a week weeding you’re garden, it’s time to change your strategy. I hardly ever say this about gardening, but you’re doing it wrong.
The #1 way to cut down on weeding is to keep the soil covered. That’s it. That’s the “secret”.
If you think about natural areas like forests and grasslands, there isn’t much bare soil. That’s because exposed soil is more likely to erode, blow away or get compacted. Weeds are the first line of defense. They’re sent in to quickly sprout and set down roots so they can keep the soil in place. They’re just doing their job.
If you’re like me, you don’t really need or want the weeds in your garden doing their job. (I can handle things just fine on my own, thank you.)
So, that means you need to minimize the amount of bare soil in your garden at all times. Using mulch is the way to do this. And fall is a great time to start this new habit.
